Puerto Vallarta Icons at Sunset

Overview:

This piece celebrates the two most recognizable symbols on Puerto Vallarta’s Malecón. At centre stage stands “El caballito”—Rafael Zamarripa’s bronze sculpture of a boy riding a seahorse. Two versions of this work exist in the city; the enlarged replica along the downtown Malecón (installed in 1976) has become an emblem of the waterfront and a centerpiece of countless photographs and cultural events . The seahorse not only represents the richness of Banderas Bay’s marine life; it embodies the free and adventurous spirit of Vallarta’s people and appears on postcards and souvenirs around the world .

Flanking the sculpture is the colorful “PUERTO VALLARTA” sign, introduced during World Tourism Day 2016 . Sculptor Carlos Terres designed and built the letters, incorporating motifs inspired by Puerto Vallarta’s most famous painter, Manuel Lepe—known for his naïf‑style art that celebrates local traditions and landscapes . Each letter is a miniature artwork, making this sign one of the city’s most popular photo spots .

Set against a glowing sunset and the quiet bay, the painting brings these icons together, capturing the warmth and friendliness for which Puerto Vallarta is known .
